The UAB High School Programming Contest (HSPC) brings talented students from high schools throughout Alabama to the UAB campus to participate in an organized competition. Students individually compete to demonstrate their programming skills and problem solving abilities by attempting to solve six programming problems within a three hour period. Schools that have more than three contestants are also eligible for team awards.

 Saturday, May 12, 2007 from 10:30am-4:45pm in Campbell Hall at UAB

NEW! The Alice Film Festival (AFF) is a co-located event where students submit movies written in Alice. Prior to the HSPC Awards ceremony, movies from the AFF will be shown. Awards will be given out at the film festival in several categories. More information about the AFF is available here.

NEW! The CIS Department will be offering a 5-week summer camp for high school and middle school students. If you live in the Birmingham area and are interested in the camps, more information is available here.

General Information

Registration Information

  • Registration for this event is limited to the first 40 students to respond. A waitlist will be maintained in case of cancellations, or if additional spaces are available after the registration period.

  • If more than 5 students pre-register from any one school, only the first five from that school will be selected. Schools with more than 5 applicants will have their additional students placed on the waitlist for future consideration.

  • Registration is $20 per student.

  • There are two phases to the registration process:

Phase 1: To pre-register, fill out the Intent to Participate form and email it to hspc@cis.uab.edu. The deadline for submission of this form is April 1st. The registration fee is not due for pre-registration.

Phase 2: If you are among the first 40 students to pre-register, you will be notified by the organizers. At this stage, you must submit the registration fee before May 1st. The waitlist will be opened up after this deadline.

Schedule of Events

In addition to the actual contest, a fun day is planned with food and social activities. Opportunities to meet and interact with UAB computer science faculty will be provided, as well as a keynote presentation by Dr. Caitlin Kelleher of Carnegie-Mellon University.

List of Prizes

All students will receive a T-shirt and a certificate of participation. Prizes will be awarded to contestants with the top 15 scores. The list of prizes include:

1st place:  Dell LaptopVisual Studio, and award plaque
2nd place: Microsoft Xbox 360 Visual Studio, and award plaque
3rd place: $50 gift certificate, Visual Studio, and award plaque

Students placing among 1st through 15th place will also receive a copy of  Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in Java. These books are provided through sponsorship by Addison-Wesley.

First place through third place award plaques will also be given to eligible teams. The first place team will also receive a Visual Studio license.
